Chilla Safari is the most popular and sought-after safari zone in Rajaji National Park. Located along the sacred Ganges river in Haridwar district, Chilla offers the highest chances of spotting Bengal tigers and Asian elephants in their natural habitat.
The zone covers approximately 25 to 30 kilometers of diverse terrain. It includes riverine forests, dense sal woodlands, and open grasslands. This variety creates perfect conditions for wildlife sightings throughout the year.
Whether you are a first-time visitor or a wildlife photography enthusiast, Chilla Zone delivers an unforgettable jungle experience. The zone remains open from November 15 to June 15 each year.
Chilla stands out among all six safari zones in Rajaji National Park for several compelling reasons. The zone's unique geography and wildlife density make it exceptional.
Chilla Zone has the highest concentration of Bengal tigers in Rajaji. Forest department surveys indicate that approximately 40 percent of the park's tiger population uses this corridor.
The presence of the Ganges river creates a natural boundary. This forces tigers to use specific crossing points that safari routes cover.
The sacred Ganges flows through Chilla for about 24 kilometers. This river acts as a year-round water source that attracts all wildlife species.
Chilla is not just about tigers. The zone hosts over 250 bird species making it excellent for bird watching.
Chilla Gate is just 12 kilometers from Haridwar city center. It takes only 20 to 25 minutes by road to reach the entry point.
The Chilla safari route is carefully designed to maximize wildlife encounters. The 25 to 30 kilometer circuit takes you through varied habitats in a 2.5 to 3 hour journey.
The safari begins at Chilla Gate near Ganga Bhogpur village. After entry formalities, your jeep heads into dense sal forest. The first few kilometers pass through thick vegetation where leopards sometimes rest.
The route then opens to the Ganges riverside track. This scenic stretch offers stunning river views and frequent elephant sightings. Tigers use this corridor to move between forest patches.
Safari vehicles follow established tracks to Mandal, Mithawali, and Khara areas. Each section has different terrain and wildlife patterns. Your guide knows the best spots for each season.
Several locations along the route are wildlife hotspots. The riverside grasslands near the Ganges are excellent for elephants and deer. Water holes in the forest interior attract all species during summer.
Rocky outcrops and hill slopes host leopards and sloth bears. Open meadows are where herbivores graze in large numbers. Tigers often patrol the boundaries between forest and grassland.
Chilla offers outstanding photography opportunities. The riverside sections provide beautiful backdrops with the Ganges and distant hills. Early morning light creates perfect conditions for wildlife portraits.
The forest trails have dappled sunlight filtering through trees. This creates dramatic lighting for photos. Open grasslands work well for action shots of running deer or grazing elephants.
Remember to keep your camera ready at all times. Wildlife appearances are often sudden. Use a zoom lens of at least 300mm for good results. Avoid flash photography as it disturbs animals.
Each safari lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. This timing allows comprehensive coverage without rushing. The 25 to 30 kilometer distance is covered at a moderate pace with stops for wildlife viewing.
Your guide will adjust the route based on recent sightings. If tigers are spotted in a particular area, the vehicle spends more time there. Flexibility is key to maximizing your experience.
